Proof-reading and Editing
    Back Next

Proof-reading and editing is a habit children should get into when they first start to write. Try to get them to think about reading what they have written as if they were seeing it for the first time. One way of saving time during the tutoring session is to discuss topics during one session and ask them to write a page for the next session. Then you can dictate it to them as they type it into a text editor.

Look for the red squiqqles that are suggested mis-spellings and ask the child if to think about whether the suggested words are incorrect or not.
Look at the green squiggles and talk about whether corrections should be made there.
Look for other errors or things that might be clarified.
Look for other ways that might improve the text by making it more readable, more accurate, or more fun to read. It might be easier to make several passes focused on each of these areas.
Tip Research has shown that children often make MORE errors when using a text editor than without one because they don't have good skills about deciding if the suggestion is correct or not! Be aware that these suggestions are just that, and some errors are missed, and some suggestions are in error!
